In 2015 und 2016 I took two road trips to the Californian hinterland. And of course I already knew about the drought situation. It still hit me how dry everything really was, though. A lot of the Californian land has of course been a desert for a long time, but to see for instance the land along the Interstate5 looking nearly like Death Valley except for some small and obviously heavily fertilized agricultural parts, was shocking to me. And I also remembered the national park Joshua Tree a bit greener. At least the trees.
Especially because the term „California“ still triggers the cliche paradisal images and is nearly exclusively associated with beautiful beaches, palm trees and happy surfers, I decided to show a different view. This series mixes deliberately images of Californian deserts and drought-affected locations.
